Meet Emma Laing, our Art Room Workshop Leader

December 14, 2022

How long have you worked at Camphill School Aberdeen?

I started at Camphill School Aberdeen in 2019 after I graduated Gray's School of Art.

What brought you to Camphill School Aberdeen?

The workshop assistant role appeared just at the right time, it felt like luck! It's a service that really provides a unique collaboration of care and purposeful therapeutic jobs for students. After providing art sessions in a variety of care settings throughout my time at university this role really appealed to me. It allowed me to work in a care environment whilst also incorporating my degree into my every day work.

What does your role at Camphill School Aberdeen consist of?

The Art Room Workshop Leader is a role that provides a crossover of making art and working with students, which is something I always wanted to do! I love creating projects that work for a wide range of abilities and meet a variety of therapeutic needs. We undertake a variety of processes including printmaking, paper making, painting and weaving.

What kind of Christmas activities have you been doing last month and planned this month?

Over the last month, we have undertaken a project to create 500 Christmas cards for the management and the fundraising team. This was a project I wanted to do with as many students that attend my workshop as possible. We have used a layered image technique which includes print, paint, collage and elements of drawing to complete the final card. Every card is unique and brings together a variety of skills and people - bringing together all abilities.

Are there any key highlights that stand out for you during your time at Camphill School Aberdeen?

Taking on the role of Workshop leader within the Art Room would be the biggest highlight for me but, the people I'm working with everyday makes my job very special.

How much of a difference will the capital appeal campaign when complete make to students and their families at Camphill School Aberdeen?

The capital appeal campaign provides a future for our service, it's very exciting to watch it grow and bring new opportunities for us at Camphill School Aberdeen.
