Meet Luisa Pohlenz, Senior Care Worker at Camphill School Aberdeen

Our ‘Meet the Team’ series aims to highlight the exceptional staff and volunteers who work hard to make Camphill School Aberdeen the wonderful place that it is. Next up in our ‘Meet the Team’ series is Luisa Pohlenz, Senior Care Worker in Linden House.

What is your role at Camphill School Aberdeen and what does it consist of?

I’m a Senior Care Worker in Linden House, the newest house on Murtle Estate.

In my role, I make sure the needs of the young people we look after are met, their rights promoted, and their potential achieved. I  do my best to create a homely atmosphere where everyone who enters Linden feels welcome.

How long have you worked at Camphill School Aberdeen?

I joined Camphill in summer 2022 as a gap-year volunteer, so this summer it will be three years.

How did you first hear of the role and Camphill School Aberdeen?

After finishing school, I wanted to spend a year volunteering abroad, outside of Germany, where I am from. A friend of mine told me about the Camphill movement, and I thought it would be perfect for me.

What’s your favourite part of your role?

One of my favourite parts of the role is supporting the young people in the workshops. I love seeing them gain new skills and take pride in what they create. I remember one young person beaming with joy after sewing a doll and showing it to everyone. Making it took her a lot of patience.

I also like the evenings that we spend together as a community. On Thursdays, we always have a sing-along evening, our young people love the music.

Do you have any highlights of your time at Camphill School Aberdeen?

One day I like to think back to is Ascension Day last year. About 20 people, young adults and supporting staff, went on a walk up Bennachie. The weather was to dream of, we had brought good food to eat at the top, and everyone was in an amazing mood.

How are the young people settling into Linden House?

Just the other day, one of the young people told me how happy he is to have moved in. His room is now much bigger, better soundproofed, and he likes his ensuite bathroom.

What difference has Linden House made to the young people so far?

The spaces we live in have a great impact on us, and Linden House, with its high ceilings, many windows and open layout, has a bright, airy feel that makes it a nice place to be. And while it takes time to fill a house with memories, I believe we have furnished and decorated it well to create a homely space.

The wide corridors and doorways and the layout of the rooms and exits allow us to meet the needs of people who need a lot of physical support much better.

When you’re not working, how do you enjoy spending your time?

I like to spend time with friends and explore the landscapes Scotland has to offer. Even after three years, I am still awestruck by its beauty.
