How long have you worked at Camphill School Aberdeen, and what did you do prior to joining the organisation?
I have worked at Camphill School Aberdeenfor six years as a chef at Camphill House. Before joining the organisation, I gained experience across a range of catering environments, including care homes, hospitals, restaurants, and hotels. This background has given me a broad understanding of different dietary needs and high-volume cooking, which I bring into my role every day.
What is it about cooking that you really enjoy?
What I enjoy most about cooking is being able to prepare delicious food that makes people happy. I cook for over 45 children and staff, and it is very rewarding to know that the meals I prepare are enjoyed and appreciated. Seeing people happy at mealtimes is what motivates me.
What attracted you to the organisation?
I was attracted to Camphill School Aberdeen because of its countryside setting and the opportunity to work in a peaceful, natural environment. I also liked the friendly atmosphere and the sense of community that was clear from the start.
What does a typical day look like foryou?
A typical day involves preparing and cooking meals, keeping the kitchen clean and organised, and ensuring all food safety standards are followed. There is a strong focus on maintaining hygiene and making sure everything is prepared safely and to a high standard for the children and staff.
Food plays an important role in wellbeing. How do you ensure meals are both nutritious and enjoyable for the children and young people you support?
It is important that the food is both nutritious and enjoyable. I always aim to make meals that are well-balanced but also full of flavour. Seasoning plays a big part in this. Some of the children’s favourite meals include chilli con carne, chicken curry, hot pot, and pizza, so I try to make sure there is variety and that their favourites are regularly included.
The whole process of growing produce, cooking, and eating meals together is an integral part of life at Camphill. How important is that in creating a sense of community?
This process is very important. Children are able to enjoy fresh food every day, and meals are a time when everyone comes together. Sharing food in this way helps create a strong sense of community and connection across Camphill.
How do the seasons influence what is served?
The seasons have a direct influence on what we serve. We use fruit and vegetables that have been grown in the garden, and meals are planned around what is in season and available. This helps ensure the food is fresh and makes use of what has been grown within the community.
Is there a particular meal or recipe that has become a favourite among residents and staff?
Some of the most popular meals include chicken curry with rice and chicken fajitas. These dishes are enjoyed by both children and staff and are often requested as favourites.
What do you enjoy most about working at Camphill School Aberdeen, and what makes it different from other catering roles?
What I enjoy most is the people. The children, staff, and overall environment are very friendly. It feels very different from other catering roles because of the sense of community and the positive atmosphere throughout the school.
When you’re not working, how do you enjoy your time?
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I also like cycling and swimming, which help me relax and stay active.
