Notice: BACE Name Change

Change to the Title of the Degree

From August 2010 the title of the degree programme will be changed from:

BA (Hons) in Curative Education to BA (Hons) in Social Pedagogy.

There had been a growing unease with the use of the term ‘curative education’ due to its medical, diagnostic and school based connotations resulting in misunderstandings regarding the training offered and the professional capabilities of the graduating student.  Following extensive consultations with partner communities throughout the UK and Ireland, the title of the programme has been changed to ‘BA (Hons) in Social Pedagogy.’  Through this change we aim to ensure the programme becomes better understood, more visible and more widely recognised.

The change in title will come into effect at the start of the next academic year,  2010-2011.

The content of the programme will continue to be informed by values and attitudes arising from the work of Rudolf Steiner adding a spiritual dimension to the holistic understanding of the human being and human relationships, and also by a range of other theories and approaches to work with individuals with complex needs and their families.

From its beginnings in the 1950s the programme adopted a strong social pedagogical approach to education and care as revealed in its emphasis on the promotion of life sharing rich in individual encounter and appreciation for the mutuality of relationships.  This continues, encouraging the use of creative social, cultural and practical activities to support learning and development.  The current programme will now be positioned within the social pedagogical tradition at a time when, supported by a growing body of research, trainings in social pedagogy are being developed in the UK.
