BA Honours Programme in Curative Education

!! Important Notice !!

The BA in Curative Education (BACE) is a practice-based training offered by the Camphill School Aberdeen (CSA) in partnership with Aberdeen University: it seeks to integrate theoretical teaching with practical experience in the Curative Education areas of care, education, therapeutic activities and crafts. The teaching is informed by the philosophical principles of Rudolf Steiner which adopt the view of the human being as a biological, social, psychological and spiritual entity. In its interdisciplinary character, the BACE represents a challenge to traditional concepts of professional training.

Curative Education is a multi-disciplinary professional approach concerned with the physical, emotional and spiritual well being of children and adults with special/complex needs. It encompasses care, education, craft and artistic activities and a medical, therapeutic element.

The Programme brings together some 80 students from all over the world; out of this number about 60 students live, work and learn in the CSA, supported by the strong and lively commitment to ongoing learning and development that lives in the community and provides the framework of a vibrant Learning Community. The great diversity of students who have quite different outlooks, life experiences and sets of values contributes to the richness of the experience of all who live, study and learn in the CSA.

Course structure and content

During Stage I the focus of learning is on the care and support of pupils with complex needs. You will live in family units with pupils, residents and co-workers, and gain practical care skills under the direct supervision of experienced Curative Educators. This important avenue of experiential learning aims to develop your abilities to form sensitive, empathic relationships with the children, and to acquire the skills of responsible care management through the day-to-day activities of the extended family within your designated house. This forms the basis of the first stage practice, theory teaching and assessment.

In Stage II the focus widens to the experience of and assessment in more than one area of Curative Education, for example therapeutic activities, crafts or classroom education, whilst deepening the theoretical knowledge of Curative Education.

In Stage III you will be asked to take on wider responsibilities in the Community/workplace, such as organizing leisure or cultural activities, and begin to participate in management tasks within the organisation. You will also have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge and practice skill in one particular area of Curative Education and engage in relevant research activities.

During Stage IV you will continue to carry practical tasks whilst engaging in a research project.
